Question: I have Sjogren’s syndrome. When I take supplemental antioxidants my symptoms get worse, especially the fatigue, but I can eat fruits and vegetables. Why does my body react this way?
Dr. Blaylock's Answer:
Sjogren’s is a syndrome linked to an autoimmune mechanism. Several vitamins enhance immunity and can make the symptoms worse. This is especially true of the carotenoids (beta-carotene and astaxanthin). Pure curcumin extract from turmeric would be better. Mixing it with extra-virgin olive oil greatly enhances absorption. Quercetin is another good anti-inflammatory.
Additional supplements that reduce inflammation and autoimmune reactions include high-EPA omega-3 oils, magnesium, skullcap extract (Balcalein), jatoba extract, and hawthorn extract.
Editor's Note: Tennis champion Venus Williams recently withdrew from the 2011 U.S. Open after revealing she has Sjogren's syndrome.
