Knowing whether you are an “apple” or a “pear” is important to your health. Pear-shaped people carry their weight primarily in their hips and buttocks. Apple-shaped people carry their weight primarily in their abdomen. According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), health risks seem to increase for apple-shaped people who have a waist measurement of greater than 35 inches for women, and or 40 inches for men.
Abdominal fat is worse than fat on the buttocks or thighs because that extra fat surrounds important organs such as the liver and pancreas, says the ADA. When you have fat in this area, your body can’t use the insulin produced by your pancreas very well. This results in insulin resistance and causes high blood sugar levels, which puts your organs at higher risk.
If you lose weight all around, the amount of fat stored around your waist and important organs will decrease, allowing the organs to function better.
