Take a close look at the Nevada state quarter...

This quarter could easily become one of the last places we will ever see a wild mustang if the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and certain special interests continue having their way.

I have a special favor to ask.

First, please sign and return the enclosed Stop the Nevada Roundups petitions to Nevada’s two U.S. Senators. While Majority Leader Harry Reid has a mixed record on horse welfare issues, we hope he may help as he faces a tough re-election fight. Senator John Ensign is a veterinarian and a sponsor of the bill (S.727) to ban horse slaughter.

We are continuing our nationwide petition campaign to target these two U.S. Senators. Our thought is that the BLM often defers to home state congressional opposition, especially if a senator has a leadership position, like Majority Leader Reid.

Nevada has been home to about half of the remaining mustangs living free. Estimates vary from as few as 15,000 up to 30,000 wild horses left in ten Western states.

Nevada Calico death toll mounts. This colt was run so hard his hooves separated from his legs.

Nevada is also home to the infamous Calico roundup that has resulted in the deaths of 143 mustangs so far this year, 39 of those being aborted foals.

The BLM’s plan to “zero out” 11 Nevada herds will drastically diminish the number of wild horses left in this state.

Your help is needed because this is a do-or-die moment for our precious American mustangs. The brutal Calico roundup is further evidence that the BLM management has no respect for the American mustang.

Our public lands in the West are meant to be shared by both livestock and wild animals. However, a number of BLM officials – heavily influenced by lobbyists for the livestock, oil and gas, and big game hunting interests – continue to decimate our wild horse (and burro) herds in spite of past claims of budgetary shortfalls.

The hatred for wild horses is such that a proposal by BLM officials last year showed a plan to kill 30,000 wild horses in government holding pens.

While this horrific plan has not gone into effect, it remains a possibility, unless we continue to speak out, I wonder how you and I will be able to stop more roundups scheduled for this year unless we take action today.

Please sign our Stop the Nevada Roundups petitions now!

You can be sure that FRER is doing all that we can to stop these roundups.

FRER has been a plaintiff in three lawsuits against the BLM’s mismanagement of wild horse herds.

One lawsuit, to stop the zeroing out of the West Douglas Creek herd in Colorado, was ruled in our favor earlier last year.

With your support, we must launch an even larger legal and public relations campaign to save our quickly diminishing wild horse herds.

Lucky survivors. 74 horses

died in this hellhole.

That’s why I hope you can give $30 or perhaps even $100 in this crisis. I know that I’m asking for a large gift, but time is against our wild horses – especially for those still suffering in Nevada from the Calico roundup. It is sickening to think of their imminent suffering; their freedom stripped away forever.

Please donate if at all possible.

I’m really counting on your help in this difficult time. Front Range Equine Rescue continues to explore options, legal and otherwise, to prevent the BLM from ever acting on its proposal from last year to kill wild horses in holding facilities or send more to slaughter.

In the meantime, you and I must step up to the plate and rescue more mustangs so they don’t end up slaughtered or starved to death – as happened at the ranch in Nebraska and is, no doubt, occurring elsewhere as you read this.

Please make a gift of $30, $50 or even $100 today. All of us must band together to help ensure the survival of the American mustang for future generations. These horses are part of our heritage and well worth preserving.

Thank you,
Hilary T. Wood
