Smoking Worsens Diabetes

Question: Does smoking raise blood sugar levels and make diabetes worse?

Dr. Hibberd's Answer:

Smoking is not known to raise blood sugar levels. However, the most devastating and feared complications of Type 2 diabetes are worsened and may actually be precipitated by smoking.

If you are diabetic and smoke, you will increase your risk for complications exponentially. Much higher rates of heart attack, stroke, blindness, infection, limb loss, and renal failure are seen in diabetics who smoke. By adding smoking risk factors to diabetes, you add fuel to the fire of disease, disability, reduced quality of life, and shorter life expectancy.
