Flaxseed Oil or Fish Oil?

Question: Is flaxseed oil as good as fish oil for all-around health benefits?

Dr. Hibberd's Answer:

Fish oil from cold-water fish provides the most benefits when using supplemental omega-3 fatty acids. Cardiovascular studies using fish oil for improving cardiac risk and preventing recurrent cardiovascular events are very convincing. Not all fish oil is the same, so seek the advice of your doctor.

If you wish an FDA-approved source of prescription fish oil, ask your doctor if Lovaza is appropriate for you. This drug is covered under many prescription drug plans, costing you a fraction of its retail price, and will probably cost you significantly less out-of-pocket than trying to buy over-the-counter fish oil DHA/EPA supplements that are probably of less quality.
