High-Protein Diet Dangers

Question: You have written that whey protein is dangerous. I have in the past enjoyed smoothies made with protein powder, fruit, yogurt, etc. These are not whey, but protein. Do you also recommend not drinking these?

Dr. Blaylock's Answer:

High-protein diets alter special cell-signaling mechanisms that damage cells and shorten lifespan. We are now seeing that this mechanism is playing a major role in many diseases, especially degenerative diseases of the brain.

Protein drinks, even those not made from whey, are high in glutamate, which is a major excitotoxin. It also is a powerful promoter of cancer growth and cancer spread.

If a person is deficient in proteins, they should supplement. The safest protein combination is with the branched chain amino acids — valine, leucine, and isoleucine — which can be purchased in supplement form. I have used them extensively to promote healing in surgical patients and those with liver diseases.

Recent studies show that these amino acids also lower cortisol levels in the elderly. (As we age our cortisol levels rise.) High cortisol levels are associated with brain degeneration, sleep difficulties, and other problems.
