It's nearly blueberry season—fresh U.S. blueberries are usually available from May through October, and imported blueberries can be bought all year long. Besides the fact that blueberries are delicious, there are many other reasons to enjoy this fruit as much as you can:
1. Tufts University researchers analyzed the antioxidant content of 60 fruits and vegetables—and blueberries came out on top! This means blueberries may help to reduce your risk of heart disease, cancer, cataracts, glaucoma and other conditions.
2. Blueberries are good for the brain! Studies have shown that blueberries not only may help improve learning and memory capacity, but also can fight the effects of Alzheimer's disease.
3. Blueberries are high in the soluble fiber pectin, which can help to lower cholesterol.
Blueberries last for about a week in a covered container in the fridge. They're very delicate, so wash them just before eating. Add blueberries to yogurt or cereal, or mix them into a fruit salad for a burst of beneficial blue!
