3 Ways to Feel Satisfied Without the Salt

What do soups, lunch meats and pretzels all have in common? They're full of sodium! Eating too much salt can increase our risk of coronary heart disease, stroke and heart attacks. Although it does help if we cut down on the amount of salt we add to our meals, 75 percent of the sodium we consume actually comes from processed foods, so it's more difficult to judge our intake.

What do we do when the cravings hit and we feel the need for something salty? Here are three simple tips to help reduce the salt and still feel satisfied:

1. Canned soups, veggies and pasta sauces can contain a staggering amount of sodium. Instead, look for low-salt versions—or make your own!

2. Condiments like ketchup and salad dressing can be surprisingly high in salt. Use them sparingly on your turkey or veggie burgers and salads.

3. Packaged cereals tend to contain extra salt for added flavor. Look for low-sodium versions and try to limit yourself to one serving.
