Question: How does one lose a lot of weight and not end up looking like a
shar pei?
Dr. Hibberd's Answer:
The only secret to losing and maintaining your weight in a healthy range is to establish reasonable regular dietary habits in conjunction with a sensible regular aerobic exercise routine. See your doctor if you have problems with establishing weight correction or its maintenance to be sure you have no underlying medical conditions that are impeding your quest for a healthy physique.
Avoid sudden large losses, since these losses are usually associated with starvation-equivalent diets, which we now recognize may be hazardous to some, not to mention responsible for the "shar pei" effect that is often seen.
Repeated liposuction often gives the same appearance, especially when the skin has been under excess tension and some of the elastic properties typical of healthy skin have been damaged.
Generally our skin is very forgiving and "shar pei" effects are much less common than the usual stretch marks referred to as striae. Striae are very unpredictable and are very commonly seen in women after pregnancy.
