The Difference Between a Treat and a Snack

If you find yourself feeling hungry between mealtimes, what do you reach

for-a treat, or a snack? Do you know the difference between the two?

Dawn Jackson Blatner, R.N., L.D.N, author of The Flexitarian Diet, says that

you should always be reaching for the snack rather than the treat, and

here's why: Snacks are nourishing and filling, whereas treats are for

special occasions.

For snacks, think hummus and carrots, pears and string cheese, apples and

almonds-things that will fill you up without being high in fat, calories or

sugar. For treats, think candy, cookies, ice cream, chips-unhealthy items

that won't satisfy and will likely leave you wanting more.

Blatner says a good rule of thumb is to snack once or twice a day-and leave

the treats for birthday parties or other celebrations. As a bonus, once you

start snacking and stop treating, you may even shed a few extra pounds!
