Does High Blood Sugar Cause Diabetes?

Question: Does high blood sugar cause Type 2 diabetes?

Dr. Brownstein's Answer:

No. Elevated blood sugar is the marker needed to confirm the diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes, but does not cause it. Although the exact cause is unknown, there are many underlying factors that are directly related to causing diabetes, such as a diet high in refined sugars, obesity, and advancing age.
