How Do I Develop an Integrated Holistic Program?

Question: I am 62, had bypass surgery in 2001, and have had no symptoms since then. I take 20 mg of Lipitor, 50 mg of Metoprolol, Diovan/HCT, 325 mg of aspirin, and an assortment of other supplements. I am 5 feet 11 inches, weigh 220 pounds, and have had trouble keeping my blood pressure under control.

My concern is that I do not have an integrated and complete program within which my supplements, nutrition, and exercise work. How do I begin the process of developing a program for my specific needs?

Dr. Brownstein's Answer:

You did not get heart disease due to a lack of a prescription medication. Heart disease develops because of a constellation of problems, including a poor diet, oxidant stress, nutrient and hormonal imbalances (and deficiencies), plus stress.

The first step in any integrated holistic program is to rid your diet of refined foods. The use of statin drugs does not prolong one’s life nor significantly prevent heart attacks or strokes. Any natural program to treat and prevent heart disease should include vitamin C. You’ll find more help in my book "Drugs That Don’t Work and Natural Therapies That Do, 2nd Edition."

The best results can be achieved by working with a holistic healthcare provider. See www.acam.org to find a holistic doctor near you. Click on the link “public information” and then choose “physician link.”
