What Causes Stomach Gas?

Question: What causes stomach gas? I seem to have a tremendous amount — belching — but I never get heartburn, feel great, and am in great shape.

Dr. Hibberd’s Answer:

The most common cause of stomach gas is swallowing air, which will often happen when we rush meals and talk while we eat. Gas in healthy person will occasionally respond to simethicone and other antiflatulent agents, but usually lifestyle modifications are also necessary.

I have seen excess gas as an early symptom of underlying heart disease. Since I do not have sufficient information to evaluate your cardiac risk, I must encourage you to seek professional examination and evaluation.
