Protect Your Blood Vessels and Vision

When blood glucose levels remain elevated for an extended period of time, sticky sugar molecules can attach to protein molecules in a process called glycation. This process creates new protein structures called AGEs (advanced glycosylation end products), which can cause tissues like the collagen in our blood vessels to become stiff and lose their flexibility. This may result in many diabetic complications, including cataracts and retinopathy.

I believe one of the best ways to protect the health of your blood vessels is with L-carnosine, a natural combination of two amino acids: beta-alanine ad L-histidine. L-carnosine is a potent antioxidant, but its main claim to fame is its ability to hinder glycation. In fact, it’s considered to be the most potent glycation super-fighter ever discovered.

L-carnosine works by competing with proteins for the same binding sites on sugar molecules, thus preventing glycation and the resulting protein damage. And it helps our bodies remove and replace pre-existing AGEs.

Since the blood vessels in the eyes can be especially vulnerable to the effects of unbalanced blood sugar, I recommend using special eye drops that contain L-carnosine.

One brand to consider is Visual Ocuity, an advanced eye drop product containing 1% N-acetyl-carnosine. The suggested use is to apply one to two drops in each eye daily. However, these eye drops aren’t for everyone, so please check with your physician before using them if you have any kind of degenerative eye condition.

Yours in good health,
Dr. Whitaker
