I’ve had many patients beat diabetes by following the exact opposite of what the American Diabetes Association (ADA) recommends.
They followed a diet that’s low in carbohydrate and high in protein. Not low in fat.
Contrary to the advice of the ADA, eating a low-fat diet will not help. In fact, it will make your condition worse.
That’s because most low-fat diets are loaded with starches. Starchy foods like pasta, bread and most cereals increase your blood sugar and open the floodgates of insulin in your body.
This may sound like Atkins’ recommendation. It is… basically. But I have some differences.
You need to make protein the main course of every meal. Base your diet on grass-fed beef, buffalo, wild game and eggs. For variety, add an occasional wild-caught, cold-water fish.
Why grass-fed? Because modern farms feed animals grain, not grass, and prevent them from getting normal exercise. This makes for an obese animal. Not only do these products of the modern slaughterhouse have inordinate quantities of fat, but it’s the wrong kind of fat. It has an unnatural and unhealthy concentration of omega-6 fatty acids that cause heart disease.
The South Beach and Atkins diets are right to tell you to eat fewer carbs. But you can’t just eat any meat and any fat.
The right balance of increased protein and decreased carbohydrates with the right healthy fats can effectively control aspects of your metabolism and blood sugar. You can improve your energy and strength while you lose body fat.
The key to doing this is keeping your insulin low.
In my own practice, I use a handful of natural substances to improve your body’s response to insulin.
Here are three you can use to help control your blood sugar:
Chlorella: This green algae from Australia is packed with protein. It’s rich in vitamins, minerals and amino acids. It also contains magnesium, which is important for balancing your blood sugar. A recent study in the Journal of Medicinal Foods shows that chlorella increases insulin sensitivity, while reducing body fat and blood sugar.
Barley Grass: This is loaded with iron and the super antioxidant SOD, an effective anti-inflammatory.
Spirulina: This herb is grown in the waters off Africa and Mexico. Spirulina is 65 percent protein. Even the National Institutes of Health says that spirulina plays a role in combating diabetes. Their study says spirulina may reduce fasting blood-sugar levels after just eight weeks.
The best way to use these herbs is to find a drink mix that has all three in it. You can find many of these at your local health-food store.
Herbs and minerals are just one of the many natural ways you can combat diabetes. But there are so many other natural ways mainstream medicine is keeping from you.
