Question: How serious is orthostatic hypotension and what is the most effective treatment for it?
Orthostatic hypotension is a condition, not a disease. It refers to a drop in blood pressure related to movement from a lying to a standing position. It is seen in a number of medical conditions and acute and chronic disorders, and is a well-recognized side effect of numerous medications.
Asymptomatic hypotension is not usually as concerning as symptomatic hypotension. Symptomatic hypotension also may be a sign of a cardiovascular, neurologic, or spinal disorder, or hormone deficiency. It places you at increased risk for injury from a fall and should be corrected.
Treatment for this depends on the underlying cause. Further review here is too involved. Please see your private physician for evaluation and referral if necessary.
