4 Reasons to Dig the Fig

Figs are one of the most delicate fruits around—and also one of the most nutritious. As Dr. Paul Gross, author of Superfruits, says, "If Mother Nature had a vote for her ultimate superfruit, figs would be it.

" Figs are also in season right now—the California fig is at its prime from June through September. (You can also buy dried figs year round.) What makes figs so fabulous?

1. They're high in potassium, which helps to lower blood pressure.

2. Figs are rich in dietary fiber, which can help fill you up and lead to weight loss.

3. Figs are a good source of calcium, which keeps bones strong and healthy.

4. They're low in calories—a small fig has only about 30 calories.

Serve figs in oatmeal, chop them into yogurt or whole-grain cereals, or eat them plain. Since figs are so perishable, you should buy fresh ones only a day or two before you plan on eating them. However you serve them, enjoy this superfruit this summer!
