Q: I'm 40 years old, and look fine from the front but I have excessive back fat right below the bra line. Even when a bra isn't cutting into my flesh, I still have the rolls. I've seen obese women with fewer rolls than me. I also have a muffin top. I've heard there are no exercises that can get rid of fat in these areas. Any advice other than lipo?

A: Hi Lisa,
Thanks so much for your question! Back fat is a common problem, so don't feel alone in your frustration. First off, you really need to take an honest look at what you're eating. Remember, diet is 80% of your success when it comes to weight management. Try eating no more than 15 grams of sugar a day and be sure to get six servings of carbs, preferably from complex carb sources like brown rice and whole wheat bread. This will help ensure you're not eating excess empty calories, which is pretty much all you're getting when you eat refined carbohydrates and sugar-filled foods.
This next step is critical: Aim to get 20 minutes of morning cardio five days a week. You can start with three days, then work your way up to five. Research has shown that morning cardio before breakfast is more effective at burning fat, compared to cardio done after eating – so work out before your morning meal. Be sure to drink a couple glasses of water before beginning your workout. Good luck!
