Question: Other than surgery, is there anything that can be done for ulcerative colitis?
Dr. Blaylock's Answer:
This is an autoimmune disease, and several natural substances have been shown to help. Omega-3 fatty acids (high in DHA), high-dose vitamin D3 (10,000 IU a day), and probiotics (such as Theralac) modulate the overactive immune system. Multiple B vitamins, buffered vitamin C, and natural vitamin E help protect the affected colon and promote healing.
Another interesting supplement used to treat ulcerative colitis is boswellia and an extract from boswellia called AKBA. Studies on patients with the disorder have shown that both boswellia and AKBA reduce symptoms and heal the affected bowel better than any of the prescription drugs, but without the harmful side effects.
One study found that patients who took 300 mg of boswellia three times per day went into full remission (absence of symptoms) in 70 percent of patients treated, and the prescription drug, sulfasalazine, produced remission in only 40 percent of patients.
Boswellia has been shown to block an enzyme that produces the bowel inflammation. Pure Encapsulations is a good brand that makes both. You can get them from OrganicPharmacy.org. Other anti-inflammatory phytonutrients and antioxidants, such as curcumin, quercetin, ellagic acid, R-lipoic acid, and hesperidin also reduce bowel inflammation and damage.
