Although many people's experience with cranberries is limited to the sauce served with their Thanksgiving turkey, cranberries are actually a fabulous fall food with many health benefits (weight loss among them!). Here are three reasons to enjoy the cranberry even outside of a holiday feast.
1. Cranberries are high in antioxidants. Besides the usual antioxidants like vitamin C, cranberries contain more antioxidants than many other fruits. These include phytonutrients that may help decrease risk of high blood pressure.
2. Cranberries may help to lower LDL ("bad") and raise HDL ("good") cholesterol.
3. Cranberries could help prevent certain types of cancer, including colon, lung, prostate and breast cancer.
Cranberries are in season from October through December, so enjoy them now! Their tart flavor can add some zing to breakfast in cereals, oatmeal or yogurt, or in salads and rice dishes. Plus, they're low in calories at less than 50 calories per cup. Eat them fresh for the most health benefits (avoid dried cranberries, which are usually high in sugar).
