Iodine After Thyroidectomy

Question: Do people who have had a thyroidectomy still require iodine?

Dr. Brownstein's Answer:

Many patients and doctors believe that iodine is necessary only for thyroid gland functioning, but nothing could be further from the truth.

Iodine is utilized by every cell in the body. It is concentrated in all the glands, including the adrenals, ovaries, uterus, and breasts. The largest amount of iodine in the body is in the fat cells. The muscles and skin also contain a large amount of iodine. You can’t make a hormone without adequate iodine levels. Even if you have had a thyroidectomy, the rest of your body requires and utilizes iodine.
