If you're trying to lose weight, you probably find yourself turning to many healthy Japanese foods like sashimi, sushi, edamame and veggies. But there's one popular Japanese dish you may want to avoid: teriyaki chicken.
Although you'd think that grilled chicken, as opposed to its fried counterpart, wouldn't be a diet buster, this dish is loaded with added sugar, packing a whopping 10 to 12 teaspoons per serving.
What to do if you're craving the teriyaki flavor but can't afford the extra calories? Ask for the sauce on the side and lightly dip your chicken pieces, or skip the sauce altogether. If you're making teriyaki chicken at home, dilute the sauce so you can use less of it but still get a hint of that sweet and tangy teriyaki taste.
