Sardines: You either love or hate these slimy, bony fish. But there are plenty of reasons to love them if you care about losing weight and staying healthy. Why learn to savor the sardine?
1. They're rich in two omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA, which can lower cholesterol and triglycerides (fats in the blood).
2. Sardines are an excellent source of vitamin B12, which promotes both cardiovascular health and healthy nerve cell maintenance.
3. Sardines are one of the only food sources of vitamin D, essential for bone health since it increases the absorption of calcium.
4. Sardines are a great source of lean protein, which can help fill you up and keep you satisfied.
Try fresh sardines if you can find them—they're delicious when grilled. If not, canned ones last a long time and have all the same nutritional benefits. If you don't like them plain, mix them with some Dijon mustard and onion and serve atop whole-wheat crackers—a sardine "sandwich!"
