Although type 1 diabetics may do everything possible to ensure healthy blood sugar control during the day, one study warns that the risk of experiencing low blood sugar during sleep is an ever-present danger.
Published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, the study monitored a group of type 1 diabetics over the course of a week and found the number of episodes of nighttime hypoglycemia was widespread.
More troubling to researchers was the finding that bedtime snacking did not lower the risk of suffering a low blood sugar episode during sleep. Researchers called for further study on possible interventions to lower nighttime hypoglycemia risk.
