How to Stop Buying Junk Food

Do you find yourself unable to resist buying unhealthy items, like cookies and chips, whenever you go to the grocery store? If so, here's a new tactic to try: paying in cash.

A new study in the Journal of Consumer Research found that people were more likely to purchase junk food when they were paying with credit or debit cards than with cash. Why? It may be because it's harder to part with cash than use a credit card, so consumers think harder about using their hard-earned money and are less likely to make impulse purchases.

If you need another incentive to stay away from the snack food aisle next time you go grocery shopping, make sure to figure out how much you'll need to pay for healthy fruits, veggies and lean protein beforehand—and bring only enough cash to cover the essentials.
